Those who went down to The Columbia on May 10th or 11th got to check out the great line up of artists.  This was a benefit concert in memory of Todd Simko by his wife, Minna Simko.  The event was a huge success and raised $2000 for us here at CMHA Simon Fraser. We are so grateful for this generous donation and would like to thank everyone involved, and especially Minna for not only raising funds but also for raising awareness. Way to go!

"Mental health now affects 1 out of 5 people and with what has happened to my family in the last year, I could not stay silent.  I do not want people to suffer they way Todd, our family, and friends have.  It is time to get rid of the stigma that surrounds mental health.  If we as people become more open to mental health, treat it as any other disease (which it is) maybe those suffering are more likely to reach out and open up as well.  It is time to stop being silent about this." --Minna

Doors opened at 7:30pm and the concert was at 8:00pm. The was an all ages event.

For more information on the concert and the artists performing, please visit: http://www.hearingprotectionrequired.ca

Women & Wellness® proudly sponsored by Shoppers Drug Mart is a unique and popular event that supports the important work of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).  It is a social awareness/fundraising event concerned with removing the stigma of mental illness by engaging women in conversation about how mental health issues affects them, their families, and their friends. The event is designed to unite and empower women- reaching out to those who are affected by a range of mental health issues and concerns; whether they are experiencing these issues personally or acting as an advocate for someone who is not in the position to advocate for themselves.  Women are usually the frontline caregivers to those with mental health issues, and the Women and Wellness event acts as a forum to promote learning, healing, and discussion to lessen the stigma.  All proceeds raised from the Women and Wellness events go to CMHA programs that support people with mental illness, their caregivers and to educating the public on mental health issues.

Women and Wellness started as a grassroots initiative in the home of a New Brunswick woman whose brother committed suicide after struggling for many years with bi-polar disorder. She was vocal about the tragedy that had befallen her family and because of that outspokenness found that many others in her community had experienced similar tragedies, but struggled on alone due to the stigma associated with mental health.

“Through education and encouragement we hope to see a society in which mental health and mental illness is discussed openly and in which those requiring help feel empowered to ask for it” says Helen MacDonnell, Founding Chair of Women & Wellness. “We will take the first steps toward this by harnessing the incredible power that is created by hundreds of women determined to fight the stigma associated with mental illness.”

iStand Youth Summit: Up with Mental Health, Down with Stigma!

Registration is now open, so REGISTER HERE!

*** FOR YOUTH AGES 13-18 YEARS OF AGE

On Saturday March 2nd 2013, CMHASF will be partnering with the City of New Westminster, the City of Coquitlam, School Districst #40 and #43 to host the iStand Youth Summit.  The iStand Youth Summit, will bring together 200 high school students, from New Westminster and the Tri-Cities, at the Inn at the Quay in New Westminster.  This event aims to increase the awareness of mental health in youth, decrease stigma towards mental illnesses, increase connection between youth and improve the self-image and care of youth.

About one in seven young people in BC—or 15%—will have some form of mental disorder at any given time.

Because so many mental disorders—about 70%—show up before the age of 18, they can have a huge impact on a child’s development.

The purpose of iStand is to engage the youth in our communities in conversations about mental health issues and the stigma that is attached to mental illnesses.  We hope that through building awareness of mental illnesses, we can decrease the stigma towards mental illnesses and increase the connection, support, and self-image of youth. We want our youth to stand up with mental health, and down with stigma.  Youth are the building blocks of our society, we want to be able to empower them to bring positive changes to their communities.

Registration for the event is FREE! ***

Students will be provided with lunch at River's Market and will be able to participate in workshops and discussions on issues surrounding mental health and wellness.

Registration is now open, so REGISTER HERE.

***Online registration is required for your free lunch
